about

Relocations is a collaboration between Chris Herbert and Chris Summerlin. Herbert has a long history in ambient and experimental music, recording critically acclaimed releases for the Kranky, Room40 and Low Point labels. He is based in Kings Heath. Summerlin is an electric guitarist and current member of Hey Colossus, Haress and Kogumaza. He is based in Bishops Castle.

Stuck with how to proceed with a series of sprawling guitar improvisations he had recorded, Summerlin approached long-time friend Herbert for help. Herbert took the guitar sketches and ran with them: chopping, processing and re-contextualising the sounds into something entirely new and exciting to both collaborators.

The electric guitar is taken out of its original context and placed–relocated–into new sonic spaces that are completely fabricated but somehow feel real and three-dimensional to the listener.

Herbert approached this process with no desire for order or neatness. Each track dropped out of the ether largely fully formed on the first take, never over-laboured or finessed too much. The results are perhaps in opposition to most ‘ambient’ music, remaining purposefully sketchy, ambiguous, and unresolved. Songs re-shape themselves before your very ears as though by magic and are in no rush to take recognisable forms. As a result, Relocations feels like a series of mini epiphanies as each new aural world slowly comes into beautiful focus.
